A construction or engineer-procure-construct (EPC) project lives or dies on cost and billing, not just the schedule. We compare the tools Indian contractors shortlist — Primavera, Microsoft Project, Zoho Projects and our own Fast Project Management — on work breakdown, resource cost, and milestone and running-account (RA) billing, and tell you where each one fits.

A pure scheduling tool draws a beautiful Gantt. But a construction or EPC contractor also has to know what each activity will cost, issue material and machine against the right task, watch estimated cost against budget, and raise a milestone or RA (running-account) bill for the work done so far. When those live in three different places — a scheduler, a spreadsheet and an accounts package — the numbers stop matching.
Below is an honest comparison of the project tools Indian construction and EPC firms shortlist, judged on cost and billing depth alongside the schedule. We make one of them, Fast Project Management, and we say plainly where each fits. New to the topic? | Software | Best for | Pricing model | Planning & resource-cost depth | Milestone / RA billing | Support | Deployment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primavera P6 | Large EPC, infrastructure and EPC-contractor planning teams | Premium, enterprise / quote-based; usually the highest total cost here | Very deep planning, scheduling and progress; enterprise-grade and heavy to deploy, but not a per-task material BOR + stores + Indian billing tool on its own | Not a billing system; used alongside separate ERP / billing | Partner-led; structured, higher cost | Cloud or on-premise |
| Microsoft Project | Planners who need detailed scheduling and resource levelling | Per-user monthly plan or one-time desktop licence; confirm current price with the vendor | Strong scheduling and Gantt; costing is schedule-based, not a material/labour BOR tied to stores and Indian billing | No native project billing or GST; pairs with separate finance tools | Microsoft support and partners | Cloud or desktop |
| Zoho Projects | Office teams wanting task lists, timesheets and collaboration | Per-user monthly subscription with a free tier for small teams; confirm current price with the vendor | Light for construction — tasks, milestones and a Gantt, but no per-task Bill of Resources or site material/machine costing | Time and expense billing; not works-contract RA or resource-itemised project bills | Online and email; partner-led onboarding | Cloud |
| Generic construction PM apps | Teams wanting drawings, snags and site collaboration | Per-user monthly subscription | Good for documents and site coordination; typically light on resource cost estimation and Indian project billing | Varies; rarely native RA / resource-itemised bills | Online self-service | Cloud |
| Spreadsheets / Excel | Small contractors just formalising a project | Effectively free, already on every PC | Familiar but fragile — no dependency-driven Gantt, no cost roll-up, no single source of truth as sites multiply | Manual, and easy to get wrong | None | Desktop files |
| Fast Project Management | Indian construction, EPC and fabrication firms that want the schedule, the cost and the bill on one project | Per user, per project or a flat organisation fee — cloud subscription or on-premise licence. See pricing or ask for a quote | Deep — WBS tasks with predecessors on a Gantt, a per-task Bill of Resources, cost estimation against budget, and store issue against a task for estimated-vs-actual | Resource-itemised bills by project, resource or milestone, progress and RA bills, and subcontractor bill passing against a PO | On-site India implementation and training in your language, from the Improsys team in Pune | Cloud or on-premise |
How we built this list: we compared widely used project tools on the factors a construction or EPC owner actually weighs — planning and scheduling, resource cost estimation, milestone and RA billing, support model and deployment. We include our own product, Fast Project Management, and say plainly where each option fits best. There are no star ratings, no invented scores and no paid placement, and all pricing is described as a model — confirm the final figure with each vendor.
Primavera P6 is the enterprise planning standard and Microsoft Project a serious scheduler — both are built around the programme, with billing and material issue living in another system. Zoho Projects and generic construction apps are strong on tasks, documents and site collaboration, and light on resource cost and Indian works-contract billing. Spreadsheets hold up for one small site and buckle across many.
Compare that with what a Fast Project Management rollout puts on one project — the WBS, the resource cost and the RA bill together.
Our scoped claim: Fast Project Management is the best project software for Indian construction, EPC and engineering firms that want project cost and works-contract billing control, not just a schedule.
You create the project, break it into a work breakdown of activities, and schedule them on a Gantt with their dependencies. Each activity carries a Bill of Resources — material, labour and machine priced from the resource master — and cost estimation rolls that up against budget before mobilisation. On site, stores issues material against the task, progress and dated logs update against it, drawings and approvals attach to it, and the actual cost builds beside the estimate. Each month you raise the RA or milestone bill from the work actually done, pass subcontractor bills against their POs, and print the document.
It is the same platform, resource and item master and store engine as Fast Production, Fast Inventory and Fast Billing, built in Pune (Nigdi) by Improsys and run cloud or on-premise. For Indian construction and engineer-procure-construct (EPC) firms that want cost and billing control on site, Fast Project Management is a strong fit. It runs each project as a work breakdown structure of tasks on a Gantt, plans material, labour and machine on a per-task Bill of Resources, tracks estimated cost against budget, and raises milestone and running-account (RA) bills against the client. Primavera P6 suits very large planning teams, and Microsoft Project suits detailed scheduling.
RA (running-account) billing raises a bill for the work completed to date at a stage of a project, common in Indian works contracts. Fast Project Management builds resource-itemised bills by project, resource or milestone, including progress and RA bills, and passes subcontractor and supplier bills against their purchase order with clearance tracking. Bills print as documents and hand off to Fast Billing, and it works with your existing systems including Tally.
Each task carries a Bill of Resources - the material, labour and machine it needs, priced from a resource master. Cost estimation rolls those quantities against their rates into an estimated cost for the task and the project, compared against budget. Material issued from stores against a task, plus labour and machine recorded, becomes the actual cost, so estimated-versus-actual sits on the same project rather than in a separate spreadsheet.
Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project are excellent schedulers, and large EPC planning teams rely on Primavera. They are built around the programme, not around Indian project billing, material issue from stores or subcontractor bill passing, which then live in another system. Fast Project Management joins the schedule, the resource cost and the milestone or RA bill on one project, which suits construction and EPC SMEs that do not want three disconnected tools.
Fast Project Management runs both cloud and on-premise, on your own server if you prefer. It is priced per user, per project or as a flat organisation fee rather than a fixed per-seat meter. Bands are indicative - ask for a quote for your team size and modules. See the pricing page for the current model.
It is a Fast Technology product, built in Pune by Improsys on the same platform as Fast Production, Fast Inventory and Fast Billing. It serves construction and real-estate project teams, EPC and engineering contractors, and engineer-to-order and fabrication shops - any business delivering discrete projects that must be planned as a WBS, resourced, costed and billed by milestone.
